Open in editorThis is the absolute simplest solar setup you can build. A single 50W solar panel connects to a PWM charge controller, which charges a small 50Ah battery. The battery powers an LED light — enough for a garden shed, chicken coop, or workshop outbuilding.
With just four components and six wires, this is the ideal first solar project. The PWM controller is cheaper than MPPT and works well for small single-panel setups. The 50Ah battery stores enough energy for several hours of LED lighting. Once you're comfortable with this basic setup, you can scale up to larger panels and add more loads.
